New Look 6838 – Back to Basics – Wardrobe Builder
Hello all,
One thing that I know for sure about my clothing habits is that I lean toward solid colours. I’m not sure why that is. Perhaps a deep rooted desire for neatness and organization in life. A girl can dream…
I am in need of some basics; pieces that can be mixed and matched easily with other items in my closet. That said, my first entry in my RTW fast fit the bill quite nicely. I chose New Look 6838 and I made view A.
Fabric used: Ponte Knit from my local Fabricland
Did it look like the picture on the envelope: Yes
Were the instructions accurate/easy to follow: I had a quick glance at them. There is really nothing to the making of this top.
Were there any changes that you made: The only change that I made was at the neckline. The instructions have you do a simple fold over and top stitch. Instead, I sewed a stretch lace binding tape to the right side and then folded it inward for top stitching. It may be hard to see in the below picture.
Would I make it again: I think so. I can see having a couple of these in basic colours to co-ordinate with pants and skirts or to layer under jackets.
Conclusion: This was an easy sew for a Sunday afternoon. Although I sewed and serged the seams, I suspect you could quickly use a 4 thread overlock and whip this together in no time. Something that I will change the next time around is the back seam. In a ponte or any knit with stretch, I don’t see the need and will likely cut the back piece on a fold for future versions; eliminating the seam altogether.
And here is the end result.

Andrea: I have been a faster and didn’t know there was a group of women who had already done this – and for years already! Brava to you all. I’m not quite there with the underclothing but approaching it mentally. I just wanted to tell you that I recently lost 60 pounds (started out at 230) and this New Look T-shirt was my gift to myself. I’ve made it 4 times, in 2 different lengths and 2 different sleeve lengths. It shows my clavicles (I can hardly believe I now HAVE clavicles) and I love that. Yours looks wonderful and you look happy. That said, YOU GO, GIRL. ML

What a sweet comment! Thank you so very much. And congratulations to you. That kind of dedication to a goal is admirable. I agree with your thoughts on the neckline. It is a flattering cut.
